Upgrade of Information Technology infrastructure

Department of Defence - Puckapunyal

A key outcome of the Defence Reform Program is that the Puckapunyal Military Area (PMA) is to become the Arms Training Center for the Australian Army. This new role, together with the already burgeoning corporate community, mean that the existing Information Technology infrastructure cannot meet essential performance and reliability criteria.

The solution is an integrated Base Area Network (BAN) which can accommodate the expanding needs of a high level training facility, including training and support applications, voice, video, email and other services.

The Aspect Defence Group (ADG) partners being Aspect Computing and Allied Technologies Australia (ATA) have won the BAN contract.

Aspect Computing has extensive experience in Defence related information technology projects. ATA is an Australian owned SME and a leader in the field of data, voice and video communication networks. ATA is an ISO-9001 accredited company and a Federal Government Endorsed Supplier with a successful record of design and implementation of small and large networks for Defence, government agencies and private companies throughout Australia.

Drawing on their experience of delivering significant Australian Defence networking projects at Townsville, Enoggera and Bandiana, the ATA solution will deliver increased bandwidth and reliable services to the 1250 users.

The ADG project was tasked with the requirements to provide:

  • Integrated Office Automation
  • High Performance ATM Switched Network
  • Video on demand
  • Integrated Voice
  • Year 2000 Compliance
  • Microsoft NT Servers and Workstations
  • WAN Connectivity to remote sites

Aspect provided the desktop solution and servers, in conjunction with Allied supplying the complex networking solution.

It is interesting to note some of the statistics associated with the work:

  • 60 kilometres of fibre cabling
  • 163 kilometres of horizontal cabling for 1800 dual data outlets for
  • 1250 users
  • 17.5 kilometres of trenching
  • 131 buildings connected to the network

Following this project, a microwave system will be constructed to service the outlying Greytown and Mangalore Defence establishments.

The BAN provides the capability for the existing PABX's to be converted from copper to fibre optics communications and the existing security system to be integrated onto the BAN.
